at least there are some politicans that believe in free internet.  maybe we need to remind congress of how the has  internet got started and how it florished with open access..

After watching the video,  Professor Lessig, kept saying “what have you’ve done about it.”  I went to cc.org website , eff  website, wrote to my congressman and senators over copywrite laws.  I went to Professor Lessig’s  blog site, to find the different projects he is involved with.  Having a site for the authors to authorize use of their material and what they would like to keep confidential is an intelligent way to handle copywrite laws problem. He has traveled extensively to prompt his software.  the creative commons web site their goal is to produce a more effective high tech economy through the internet. They strongly believe in copyright and the purposes of it including making available for others to use and modify within the scope of how the creator allows it to be changed and used. They believe it is important to protect the rights of the creators however still help others in using copyrighted material. The creative commons web site is used for the authors of works to post their work and share it with others. The site also gives people a easier way to license their work and protect it under copyright law.   put the ownership in the creators hands not big companies

The other important topic  that i was researching was the orphan bill law.  Orphan material is material that you can not find who the author is.   Professor Lessig points out some major flaws of the bill that has been proposed, especially just limiting the information to US

SnoopStick is a USB flash drive type device that allows you to monitor what your kids, employees, or anyone using your computer is doing while on the Internet. And, you can monitor them live, in real time, from anywhere in the world.

Simply plug the SnoopStick into the computer you want to monitor. Then run the setup program to install the SnoopStick monitoring components on the computer. The whole process takes less than 60 seconds.

The SnoopStick monitoring components are completely hidden, and there are no telltale signs that the computer is being monitored. You can then unplug the SnoopStick and take it with you anywhere you go. No bigger than your thumb and less than 1/4″ thick, you can carry it in your pocket, purse, or on your keychain. Any time you want to see what web sites your kids or employees are visiting, who they are chatting with, and what they are chatting about, simply plug in your SnoopStick to any Windows based computer with an Internet connection and a USB port. SnoopStick will automatically connect to the target computer. Monitor both sides of IM conversations in real time or tell SnoopStick to display recent activity. Check the sender and recipient of every email sent or received. You can even log the user off, disable internet access, set time restrictions or even turn the computer off. All using your SnoopStick from any computer.

EASY TO USE! There are no commands to remember, no passwords to remember, just plug it in.

  • Monitor all web site access.
  • Works with all browsers and web enabled programs.
  • Monitor both sides of all “instant messenger” communications.
  • Works with all popular IM programs.
  • Monitor all email access (SMTP, POP3, IMAP) to see who and when emails were received from and sent to.
  • Monitor activities in real time, or retrieve activity logs from recent activity. SnoopStick records everything, whether you are monitoring in real time or not.
  • Store up to 12 months of activity logs directly on your SnoopStick.
  • All program modules are updated completely  automatically so you always have the latest version.
  • Send the user a pop up message alert. A good way to tell them they’re busted!
  • Turn off/on Internet access with the SnoopStick locally or remotely.
  • Set allowable times for Internet access.
  • Prevent users from using certain types of Internet programs.
  • Block access to specified ports.
  • Block access to web sites.
  • One click “Block Social Networking” option instantly blocks access to sites like MySpace.com.
  • Completely secure. Only your SnoopStick can access your computer or change the settings you have chosen.
  • Works with Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and is Vista ready.

SnoopStick is NOT a simple screen capturing or email alert product like everything else out there. It is the ONLY product that lets you see what is going on NOW, live and in real time!

SnoopStick is only $59.95 has a 30 day money back guarantee.
You may monitor up to 3 computers with a single SnoopStick License

so this technology is now easy and cheap..  I do believe any one can see what you are doing on the computer.  I think if you are blogging at work, you have to be really careful about properity information.  Maybe this is why computer communication will really never replace voice communication,  everything is recorded.  can you really every express what you are thinking.  I am doing nothing illegal, but i always feel a little parnoid on the web.

new term for our definitions

March 2, 2007

Malware
Malware is an umbrella term for various types of malicious software or programs, including viruses, Trojan horses, worms and spyware. Most of what malware targets is confidential information, says David Marcus, security research and communications manager for McAfee Avert Labs. Malware writers look for data they can steal for a profit or use themselves, he says. “It’s financialy motivated.”fortunately, cybercriminals can profit off consumers in a host of ways whether they’re stealing money or information. Malware can search for passwords on a user’s computer or install keystroke-logging software, among other exploits. Fraudsters generate revenue when someone clicks on their spam or through renting out networks of compromised computers called “botnets” to other cybercriminals. People duped into entering credit card or account information into phishing Web sites provide money-making resources for criminals.

Plus, these crooks make money buying and selling consumers’ identities in the underground market.

“Identities are being sold on the Internet every day,” says Ronald O’Brien, senior security analyst with Sophos Plc, an Oxford, England-based Internet security firm. “The more complete a profile is, the more valuable that profile becomes.”

Happily, it’s not hard to protect your computer from these schemes. “People don’t need to be security experts,” says Marcus. They need to be aware of security threats and what can happen, and then take the appropriate precautions, he says. “We don’t think it’s doomsday.”

For starters, however, understand that anti-virus software protects your computer pretty well as long as you update it frequently, but it’s not all you need to do.

“Anti-virus software is not always 100 percent,” says Paul Wood, a senior analyst at MessageLabs. “It depends on how new the attack is,” he says, adding that anti-virus software can only protect users from malware it already knows about. Given that malware writers can simply download anti-virus software from the Web like anybody else, they can test their attacks to see if the software detects it. They can then tweak their malware until it escapes discovery. By Leslie McFadden Bankrate.com

headlines on aol.  This why i am still not up to speed with online banking and paying bills. I know my information is on the web a hundred times already,( just from all the junk mail i recieve)  but is it really safe.  All it takes is some computer genuis from India and they would have all of our banking information for the united states.   how does this information stay secure?
We can worry about hackers, but what about the person who writes the security programs?  ok  now i am sounding paranoid!.

blondes have more fun?

February 24, 2007

Lisa wrote about Anna Nicole Smith and Brittany Spears..

poor anna, by the time they fiqure out what to do with her body there will be no body left..     what is the problem  what difference does it really make where she is layed to rest..  would any one really go visit her.

brittany out of control and tired of the media following her around.  who cares!

are these two really that important! I think the media has truley forgotten the boundries of peoples private lives. I am surprised we haven’t reported how may times they go to the bathroom.  It is just nonense.

Less being reported on state of affairs for the united states, terrorism, war in iraq, dick chaney still vice president after the  cia outting. do we really think reporting on the two people should take front page of the newspaper, tv and internet?

lessons of travel

February 23, 2007

“Learning and understanding what goes on in other societies and cultures makes us all better people in the long run“  from alex’s blog.  blogging it up.  this exactly why i like to travel.  for example: my son just got back from Isreal, what an impact on his view of the world.. He learned the history and saw how different it is to live in a small country fighting for existence.   My nephew just joined the marines, i know thats crazy especially at war time.  but in new york he was lost.. spoiled and did not appreciate any thing. Justin , my nephew has travelled to Japan, Phillipines, now Thailand. He describes his travels in his email and see how other people live. what a difference in their life compared to the united states.  He does sound like he is maturing and understanding how his life in the US was not so bad.

copy of his email  “Hey miriam…hows things? I am back on board as of yesterday…we were endured in missions in the phillipines. we encountered some terrorist threats…our location was an actual us combat zone…but all is well. we constructed a new school and renovated an elementry and high schoool for the citizens of general santos city. i met with the embassador…as well as a marine general and a navy admiral. the kids were great. they have so little yet they are so pleasent. the people are very accomidating, so much hospitality, it makes you realize what we take for granted in the us. it was very sad to see how the kids are forced to learn and see there living conditions first hand. i almost felt guilty for leaving but as marines we never stay in one place too long. we are now headed to singapore and once we arrive to the rear(japan) we will be deploying to iro jima following with indonesia and cambodia for several months soon afterwards. nothing else goin on trying to make the best of my travels. the kids in the phillipines made all the hard work worth it for sure. they were a blast ill never forget them. they are so bright, they have compassion for education. they appreciate things so much more than american children, they deserved our help. we thats all i got for now. i’ll check my e mail as frequent as possible so we can keep contact. tell jimmy i say hello i miss you both very much. dont worry about grandpas pics, whenever you get them too me will be fine.” -JUSTIN
